The Light that Shines

“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth (John 1:14).”
Clearly, St. John understood the relationship between Christmas and Epiphany. At Christmas we celebrate God taking flesh and becoming man, but at Epiphany we recognize that the man Jesus is indeed God in flesh. God has made His light shine upon us (Psa 118:27), and from the light of the star that guided the Magi to the light of His Glory on the Mount of Transfiguration, Epiphany is a celebration of enlightenment, of recognizing and receiving “God with us” in the person and work of Jesus Christ.
Epiphany is a feast of faith, a celebration of God’s light to lighten the Gentiles and bring salvation to the ends of the earth (Isa 49:6). Epiphany is a bright, shining time in the Church.
But isn’t it interesting that the months that give so much light to the Church are also the months with the shortest days and the least light for the world around us? Indeed, winter is a dark time for many people who suffer from loneliness, depression, anxiety and illness. What an incredible opportunity Epiphany gives us to share the light of Christ with those in need of His healing and forgiveness for their life and salvation.
If you know someone lost in the gloom of darkness and despair, show them the light of Christ and the reason for the hope that is in you (1 Peter 3:15). God has given you the Light of His Word, and He has made His light shine in your hearts through Baptism… So let Him have good use of you to shine that Light in the darkness around you to give others the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ (2 Cor 4:6).
And if things are getting a bit gloomy in your own world, remember that the Light is always on in the Church. So come for the Feast of Epiphany and every Lord’s Day to receive Him who comes for you in His Word and Sacraments to give you His light for life everlasting.
